Group Dynamics, OR, When No One Is Watching

From the Center for Faith and Culture at Lindsey Wilson College, welcome to this edition of our weekly thoughts for the upcoming Sunday's lectionary Scripture readings.

A number of readers in these weekly reflections have figured out that we like to - or at least we attempt to - place our overarching idea in the subject line. So, why the double title today?

Maybe you know the cartoon The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. There’s a segment of the show called Mr. Peabody and Sherman (also a great 2014 movie). It’s about a talking dog who is the smartest being in the world, with his "pet" boy, Sherman. One of the hallmarks from the cartoon is that it always has two titles joined by the conjunction OR. It signifies that there is a double meaning hidden around the corner. We think that the lectionary readings this week require two titles.

After you read the passages and the brief notes we extracted, you may quickly lean two directions yourself knowing that what is in our hearts reflects when no one is watching as well as in large group dynamics.

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time/17th Sunday after Pentecost (Sept. 25 - Oct. 1)

Exodus 17:1-7 (A Complaining Bunch)

Psalm 78:1-4, 12-16 (“We will tell the next generation…” v. 4b)

Philippians 2:1-13 (“Now much more in my absence -- continue to workout your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose.” v.12-13)

Matthew 21:23-32 (focusing on 28-32, The Parable of the Two Sons which certainly reminded us of another parable about two sons (Luke 15).

With most of our services online, ask your congregation to discuss/share at home a reflective exercise. Encourage reviewing our responses to difficult situations. How can looking back help us in the future?

Whether for your sermon, or a seed to share in a Bible-study at church, we hope our thoughts will, at least on occasion, be the icing-on-the-cake you need for Sunday.
